费里尼1969年作品，意大利、法国合拍，片长138分钟。《爱情神话》原名《萨蒂里孔》，根据公元一世纪罗马人阿尔比特罗的同名小说改编，影片向人们描绘了罗马帝国荒淫无度的享乐生活。在公元一世纪的罗马，Encolpio和他同学的Ascilto，正在争论着男孩Gitone的所有权。他们分了自己的财物并打算各奔东西。男孩可以选择跟从谁，他选择了Ascilto。已经决定要自杀的Encolpio，因为一起突如其来的地震而幸免于难。接下来随着在Encolpio身上发生的一系列冒险经历，导演费里尼用近乎漫画的笔法将自己幻想中的古罗马生活展现在观众面前，他并没有对影片中的道义进行批判或者赞许。难怪他在影片拍摄之前就发表声明，《萨蒂里孔》将不是一部古代历污漫软件名字史题材影片，而是一部科学幻想片。整个剧情支离破碎，涉及很多古罗马的风土人情，尤其是当时在道德、性行为、饮食及表演方面的习俗，堪称古罗马的“饮食男女”。

这部影片也是如此。影片改编自成书于公元一世纪的小说，作者是罗马著名荒淫皇帝尼禄的密友。费里尼并没有想把影片拍成一部“借古讽今”的历史教科书，而是希望影片成为一部“古罗马幻想作品”。费里尼抛开“进化”多年的社会伦理道德和宗教观念，尽量“仿真”地呈现出古罗马的社会风化。虽然如此，影片毕竟是今人想象中的古代社会复原，既然不可避免其主观色彩，费里尼干脆也不加避讳地在电影语言和影像观念上贯彻自己的主观“诗意”。正如影片预告片中的一行字幕所说的“罗马，基督之前，费里尼之后”。
尽管强调对费里尼作品不应刻板解读，但如果对导演的一些意图不能察觉的话，也未免辜负了这部宏大的史诗影片。徘徊在对肉体欲望的饥渴之中的恩科，可以看作是罗马年轻一代主流状态的代表，他还不能摆脱纯粹的肉体欲望而进入精神欲望的境界，这是罗马人无法再现希腊人辉煌的根源，同时也是基督出现基督教天主教一统欧洲的历史前景。同样，影片中也体现出罗马人的死亡观念，在这样一个物质重于精神的社会里，死亡必然是最大的威胁，所以富翁要生前建造陵墓，阿休图这个花花公子也要被死亡夺去他无忧无虑的生命，欧莫最终突破了死亡的终极界限，领悟到精神的永恒，把尸体让大家分食。
